Children are the most energetic folks, and perhaps this is why parents fail to see the need for early health check-up for them. This screening and check up are not merely because your child might have fallen sick, but preventive methods to ensure the growth of the child happens most naturally. Also, this is the best way for the doctor to understand what is healthy for the individual kid.
What happens during the check-up?
The oxygen level, heart rate, and temperature are monitored. These are called vital signs, and a nurse collects the readings as the first step, and a painless device of plastic is used for measuring this. These signs tell the doctor if everything is okay with your child. Early diagnosis of the issues is possible with this step. Height and weight measurement is the second step. This simple measurement is a sure shot way to check if the child gets enough nutrients to grow. Percentile of these factors helps the doctors and parents to compare the growth of the child with the norms.
Next parents and the doctors discuss the child’s health. The pediatrician analyses the results and if necessary, comes up with solutions on a diet, and activities. The schedule for immunization tells if vaccinations are to be given during this session.
There are few other check-ups that the doctor might recommend based on the requirement.
- For kids with low birth weight, anemia check-up is done during the first birthday. This is to check if the hemoglobin levels are right.
- When parents have high cholesterol, a cholesterol check-up is conducted for children of 2 years of age. This can also be recommended by the doctor if the family history suggests chances of cholesterol in a child, or if the child is obese.
- If the child lives in close contact with someone who has got TB, then this check-up is mandatory.
The doctor also can insist on a check-up for vision and hearing health. This check-up starts before 3 years before the child starts schooling. Early detection can help the child to possibly come out of the trouble or at least take necessary treatment at the earliest. few problems can be detected at a very age. They include-
- Eye problems like myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism
- Sinus issues
- Hearing loss
- Lead poisoning
- Learning disorders
- Psycho and social issues
- Speech disorders
The Check-ups are conducted by Qualified Physician and support staff are also present there. The parents can discuss with the doctors about the schedule for check-ups. Usually, it starts at 3 years of age. The treatment does not need to be medication always. It includes yoga, diet
corrections, breathing exercises and lifestyle modification. At times, modifications at the parent’s end are required. For instance, if the child shows signs of wheezing, the parent who is a smoker, should quit smoking, or at least smoke far off from the child. Health check-up
